John Ralph’s Vision for The Benson

The Benson Toorak began with a clear and ambitious vision: to create an exceptional retirement living community in one of Melbourne’s most established and prestigious suburbs.

John Ralph AC, Chair of the St Peter’s Development and Renewal Committee, played an important role in guiding that vision from concept to reality. The project required careful planning, strong leadership and the right team of advisers, architects and builders.

From the outset, the committee understood that The Benson needed to be more than a collection of retirement apartments. It needed to feel at home in Toorak, sit comfortably beside the historic St Peter’s Church and offer residents a level of quality that reflected the suburb’s character and expectations.

The team brought together experienced committee members, acclaimed architects Demaine Partnership and builders Buxton Construction. The result was a residence shaped by both practical insight and architectural ambition.

The brief was demanding. The Benson needed to provide spacious independent living apartments, beautifully designed shared spaces, secure access, elegant interiors and a strong sense of community. It also needed to respect the neighbouring church and contribute positively to the Toorak Road streetscape.

This careful balance became central to The Benson’s identity. The building offers privacy and independence within each apartment, while also providing residents with welcoming shared areas, landscaped gardens and a connection to the wider local community.

The Benson’s success lies in the way it brings together these different elements: architecture, location, community, security and ease of living. It is a retirement residence designed not simply for convenience, but for quality of life.

Today, The Benson continues to reflect the founding vision behind it. It remains a place for people who wish to continue living in the area they know and value, while enjoying the benefits of a secure, elegant and well-supported retirement community.

The story of The Benson is therefore not only a story of development. It is a story of stewardship, local connection and a desire to create something lasting for the Toorak community.
